The biggest corporation in the printing industry HP is not snoozing and is expanding into other industries as well. The latest move by HP is to help the production of medication. Scientists will be able to take advantage of HP device that has been developed for 10 years to create medication. This is slightly different area than HP toner cartridges for HP printers, but the technology used will be very similar.

The device was developed using HP Officejet Pro X’s printhead, which accommodates over 42,000 nozzles. The main reason why the device is necessary is due to repetition and human error involved in medication production. It works by dropping droplets of chemicals into tiny sliding containers saving hours and hours of the painful process.

Joe Dody, Business manager of speciality Printing Systems for HP said:

“We imagined the application and we worked with customers to convince ourselves and the industry that we were creating value in doing it, so we gained support from HP to make a business out of it.”

“A researcher applies between 200,000 to a million drops of the compound to test against the disease target and they hope that 10,000 are actually hits. Then they can determine what’s common between molecules and what’s the dose at which these drug molecules are causing a positive interaction with disease.”

The HP device could potentially save up to 95% of work, billions of dollars and years of the medication development processes. Printers are designed to spit out ink out of the printhead and HP’s Direct Digital Dispenser (D300) will do exactly that. Except instead of the ink, the D300 will be dropping desired substance drops, allowing the scientists to test many different substance variations saving time and increasing the chances of discovering even greater medication.

This is a perfect example of technology helping us to achieve more. It is truly inspiring and at the same time surprising to see, that printer technology is helping and changing our lives for the better in so many different ways.

To appreciate what it takes to produce a recycled ink cartridge, we figured it would be a good idea to share the remanufacturing process with you. 8 Steps to Remanufacture an Ink Cartridge

Step 1 – Weigh the Canon PG-540 ink cartridge

First things first. After we receive a used PG-540 cartridge from you, we have to weigh it first to see which cartridges still have some ink left in them. We separate the cartridges with ink in them and the ones without.

Step 2 – Spin the PG-540 cartridges

The ink cartridges which still had some ink in them have to go through a spinning process for the sponge inside the ink cartridge to dry out. It is slowly being prepared for that all important ink refill. After spinning the cartridges, it is necessary to weigh them again to ensure that all the ink has been removed from the inside of the cartridge.

Step 3 – Spray the Ink Cartridge

Step 4 – Fill the Cartridge with Ink

The fourth stage is where the major magic happens and the ink is filled into the clean and empty cartridges using the needles that insert into the cartridges (picture above). You have to be extremely careful not to fill too much or too little ink and follow precise cartridge capacity guidelines. Once the ink is in, it is time to weigh them again to ensure that all ink cartridges are the right weight.

Step 5 – Suck the Ink Cartridge

This is a vital part of the process, “sucking” the ink cartridge. All cartridges have to be “sucked” in order for them to start the ink flow, so when you insert it in your printer the ink is ready to be transferred to your printer.

Step 6 – Leave the cartridges for 7 days

Now, the ink cartridges have to be left for minimum of 7 days, for the ink to sink into the sponge inside the cartridge.

Step 7 – More Testing

After the ink cartridges have been on the shelf for a minimum of 7 days, Chris has to carry out a few printing tasks and print a couple of test pages to ensure the highest quality prints for your home or office.

Step 8 – Ready To Go

Now the ink cartridges are on the shelf, labeled and ready to be dispatched, as soon as the orders comes in.

Bear in mind that this is not the only way to remanufacture cartridges and some cartridges need to be boiled before they can be refilled and others such as compatible HP Photosmart ink cartridges, compatible Canon Pixma ink cartridges and compatible Epson Stylus ink cartridges are remanufactured in a factory in China. International corporation Lexmark has announced their exit of the inkjet industry long ago. Simply put, they just could not handle the competition from HP ink cartridges, Canon ink cartridges and Epson ink cartridges .

Lexmark are about to sell 1,500 inkjet patents which will put the final nail in the coffin in terms of Lexmarks Inkjet industry. Lexmark are cashing in instead of attempting to compete and they will sell the patents to a Japanese company called Funai Electric Company Ltd for $100 million dollars (about 78 million euros). The deal is scheduled to be completed by the first half of 2013.

Funai from Osaka in Japan has been a partner of Lexmark for over 15 years and Lexmark has indicated that the two businesses have strong relationship between each other due to so much time working together.

Funai will receive inkjet research, shares and Lexmark International, which is based in Philippines.

President and CEO of Funai, Tomonori Hayashi stated:

“This transaction provides us with a crucial and tremendous opportunity to enhance our office solution business. Funai and Lexmark have developed a great partnership and we are glad to take over Lexmarks inkjet related technology and assets. The acquisition of the latest inkjet technology enables Funai to start and grow our own business. Funai will benefit from a strong inkjet business”

It is difficult to see why Lexmark are selling the inkjet technology and the patents. Especially with inkjet printers catching up rapidly with laser printers and Epson even proved, that some of their inkjet printer are better than laserjets. However, Lexmark made a decision and only time will show whether it was the right one or the wrong one.

Chairman of Lexmark and CEO, Paul Rooke stated:

” As we continue our transition to becoming a leading end to end solutions provider, this transaction essentially completes our exit from the ownership of inkjet related assets, although we will continue to support our existing customer base with the sale of inject supplies. Funai has been a trusted partner of Lexmark’s since 1997 and I am fully confident in Funai’s ability to deliver high quality inkjet supplies for Lexmark. ”

The two companies have been in partnership for so long and while Lexmark will focus their attention on Lexmark printers and toner cartridges for Lexmark printers, it is nice to see that Lexmark will still be taking care of their existing customers by supplying ink cartridges for Lexmark inkjet printers.
