Step 1

That is exactly what today’s post is about – “How do we remanufacture ink cartridges?” So how do we do it? It’s simple, buy the ink, pour it down the empty cartridge and your are ready to print. Unfortunately, it is not as easy as that. It takes skill, patience, appropriate equipment and a lot of testing before remanufactured cartridges can go onto the consumers shelves. In order to explain the ink cartridge recycling process in detail, I have teamed up with a few experts in the world of remanufacturing ink cartridges, Chris and his assistant Josh (pictured below) to guide us through eight remanufacturing stages and to produce a compatible Canon PG-540 Black ink cartridge at the end of it.

It really is a smart move to go for compatible ink cartridges (recycled ink cartridges and remanufactured ink cartridges). To appreciate what it takes to produce a recycled ink cartridge, we figured it would be a good idea to share the remanufacturing process with you. This is a grey area for a lot of consumers and we hope you will find this information useful.

8 Steps to Remanufacture an Ink Cartridge

Step 1 – Weigh the Canon PG-540 ink cartridge

First things first. After we receive a used PG-540 cartridge from you, we have to weigh it first to see which cartridges still have some ink left in them. We separate the cartridges with ink in them and the ones without.

Step 2 – Spin the PG-540 cartridges

The ink cartridges which still had some ink in them have to go through a spinning process for the sponge inside the ink cartridge to dry out. It is slowly being prepared for that all important ink refill. After spinning the cartridges, it is necessary to weigh them again to ensure that all the ink has been removed from the inside of the cartridge.

Step 3 – Spray the Ink Cartridge

In the third stage of ink cartridge remanufacturing, Chris has sprayed the ink cartridges and the cartridge head in order to remove excess ink so the cartridge can communicate properly with the Canon printer. After spraying it, a clip is attached to the PG-540 ink cartridge for extra protection.

Step 4 – Fill the Cartridge with Ink

The fourth stage is where the major magic happens and the ink gets a refill into the clean and empty cartridges using the needles that insert into the cartridges (picture above). Firstly, you have to be extremely careful not to fill too much or too little ink and follow precise cartridge capacity guidelines. Once the ink is in, it is time to weigh them again to ensure that all ink cartridges are the right weight.

Step 5 – Suck the Ink Cartridge

This is a vital part of the process, “sucking” the ink cartridge. All cartridges have to be “sucked” in order for them to start the ink flow, so when you insert it in your printer the ink is ready to be transferred to your printer.

Step 6 – Leave the cartridges for 7 days

Now, the ink cartridges have to sit for a minimum of 7 days, for the ink to sink into the sponge inside the cartridge.

Step 7 – More Testing

After the ink cartridges have been on the shelf for a minimum of 7 days, Chris has to carry out a few printing tasks and also print a couple of test pages to ensure the highest quality prints for your home or office.

Step 8 – Ready To Go

Now the ink cartridges are on the shelf, with the correct labels and ready to dispatch, as soon as the orders comes in.

Bear in mind that this is not the only way to remanufacture cartridges and some cartridges need to boil before they can get a refill and others such as compatible HP Photosmart ink cartridges, compatible Canon Pixma ink cartridges and compatible Epson Stylus ink cartridges go through the remanufacturing process in a factory in China. Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Canon is releasing four new printer devices. The four printers are: Canon Pixma MX395, Canon Pirxma MX455, Canon MX525 and Canon Pixma MX925 printers.

The new Canon printers will boast improved functionalities and better overall printing quality. The all-in-one devices are ideal for SOHO users to enjoy decent printing quality and speed. According to Canon these printers will have 30 page automatic document feeder (ADF) to improve office life for the users. All of the models will have the capability to print through smartphones and tablets which mean even more convenient printing for users. And as if that wouldn’t be enough for conveniency, these gorgeous devices will also have Google Cloud, Google Docs and Gmail integrated in them which the user will be able to navigate easily through a large colour display.

TRC Waste Toner Used To Create Paint

An innovative partnership between two companies Toner Recycling (TRC) and Enviropaints has yielded an innovative way of recycling used toner power left over from the cartridge collection program which TRC carries out on the behalf of Ricoh, Canon, Brother, Konica Minolta and Sharp. Wayne Grieve, General Manager of TRC had been looking to the missing link in his toner recycling program which could easily recycle the plastics and metals from used toner cartridges but was having to deal with 1,000 litres of left over toner a month. “Finding a path for the waste toner was the missing piece of the jigsaw.” Wayne Grieve, General Manager of TRC.

Ministry of Environment

After looking for a solution to his problem and despite being approached by the Ministry of Environment for his country, saying that the toner could be used in a non profit system of road resurfacing, Grieve struck upon a company local to him (Enviropaints) which was willing to work together to find a solution to his problem. After six months of trials Enviropaints establish that the left over toner could be accessible for use in outdoor commercial paint which was suitable for buildings, fences and graffiti.

Grieve said that Enviropaints established that used toner was polymer based; making it suitable for use in paints. After this important discovery TRC implemented a procedure for removing left over toner from its cartridges for sending off to Enviropaints. “It has been fantastic to work with Enviropaints, which has the technical expertise to think outside the square and produce quality paints incorporating all kinds of materials which would otherwise go to landfill.” Wayne Grieve, General Manager of TRC.

Enviropaints general manager said that this is yet another exciting inclusion of products which Enviropaints use in the formulation of their recycled paint. “We are able to use the various toner colours to their maximum advantage, and have created a new-life paint through innovation. This of course has definitive cost savings on our raw materials, resulting in a sharper price to the end user without affecting the quality.” – Peter Reid , General Manager of Enviropaints.

General pointers.

Avoid choosing a printer which takes cartridges which incorporate a printhead in the cartridges design. (inkjet cartridges)
Avoid choosing a printer with only takes one colour cartridge and choose printers which take individual cartridges for each colour. (Ink tank cartridges)
Try to steer away from the cheaper £30 -£50 printers because the cartridges are expensive. Replacing a set of cartridges can cost more than the cost of these cheap printers. The more you spend on a printer the better value for money your cartridges will be.
Avoid Lexmark and Dell. These printers and cartridges represent very poor value for money, with expensive cartridges and poor build quality on consumables such as printheads and ink formulations.
If your printing is for the home or small office use compatibles as they are much cheaper and produce good printing results.
Calculate your cost-per-print by diving the pages a cartridge produces by the cost. If it’s a colour printer add up all your inks and divide by the page yield of only one cartridge not them all.

What Is It?

You can use it to quickly print off your documents and photographs from your Ipad or Iphone with your ink cartridges. Airprint is ideal for people who are always in a rush and usually need things done quickly.

Windows Play-To Verses Apple Airprint

Initially when Airprint was realised it was only compatible with 12 printers, all of which were manufactured by HP and represent some of the best value for money ink cartridges today. Compare that with Microsoft’s version of Airplay “Play To” which at that time had forty. Airplay unlike Play-To, isn’t compatible with the hundreds of DNLA (Digital Living Network Alliance) enabled devices, media streamers and photo frames which would open up cross compatibility triple fold. In 2014 the number of devices the DLNA approves in circulation estimates to reach two billion, Apples Airplay and Airprint compatibility on the hand will be microscopic in comparison.
