Happy Birthday Return of the King!

On this day, October 20th 1955, the third and final book in the Lord of the Rings trilogy by J. R. R. Tolkien was published.

As a massive Lord of the Rings nerd, and having read all three books plus The Hobbit, this coming of age for Return of the King has made me grin with glee. Here at Ink n Toner UK we’re super excited about Return of the King turning 60!

**SPOILERS**

If you’ve been living under a rock your entire life and haven’t seen the iconic films, this is just a warning to say that this article does contain spoilers so read at your own will.

Following The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers, The Return of the King continues to follow Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee on their incredible journey to Mordor and their quest to throw the ring into the fires of Mount Doom to be destroyed.

The Return of the King is probably my favourite book and film of the three as the trilogy comes to its epic conclusion with a final battle between Gollum and Frodo at Mount Doom, where the One Ring and Gollum are destroyed, freeing Middle-Earth from Sauron’s power forever. However, at the last moments Frodo finds himself wanting to keep the ring, feeling attached and not wanting to let it go, but is then attacked by Gollum who bites off Frodo’s finger to steal the ring back from him. Gollum then trips and falls into the lava of Mount Doom along with the ring.

The epic ending of this incredible trilogy is one of the most iconic and worldly recognised scenes across the globe.

Please enjoy these funny Lord of the Rings photos, including one of the most widely used sayings from the entire franchise:
