Earth Day 2023

Earth Day is celebrated every year on April 22nd since 1970. Its been observed for the last 53 years and contributed to the solving of many environmental issues from the very first time its been organised. Back in 1970, rallies took place across the United States after a US Senator from Wisconsin organised a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues, which in turn formed the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) in America by the end of the year. Earth Day is obviously celebrated to demonstrate support for environmental protection. The official theme for 2023 is ‘Invest In Our Planet’. Why is Earth Day so important? How does it connect to the printing industry? How can you celebrate Earth Day?

Earth Day 2023

April 1970

The First Earth Day, in April 1970, was created by Senator Gaylord Nelson – the “Father of Earth Day” – to force the issue of environmental protection onto the national agenda. Back then, there was no EPA, no Clean Air Act, no Clean Water Act, among many other things that are in place today. There were no legal or regulatory mechanisms to protect our environment.

Community efforts such as cleaning up rubbish from neighbourhoods and common areas, planting trees and recycling are all just a few simple ways you can contribute to celebrating Earth Day, and not just annually on April 22nd, but whenever. Today, there is huge pressure building up on governments and society in general, to clean the planet, save it from total environmental destruction before its too late.

How does the Printing Industry tie in?

The printing industry is one of many industries that innovates, recycles and changes the market with new products that don’t contribute negatively to climate change, but instead remains carbon neutral or gives back to nature by reducing CO2 emissions, plastic use and other important things. For example, Canon, for the fifth year, has been named one of Canada’s Greenest Employers in 2023. Impactful initiatives and environmental responsibility and awareness both contributed to Canon leading in terms of environment. We’d like to congratulate Canon for their efforts to help our planet and keep our environment safe.
