HP has sparked outrage from its users. Millions of HP printers have been blocked, leaving users confused as to why. The answer – cheaper, compatible cartridges are the reason.

HP has blocked off any possibility of purchasing compatible cartridges through a new firmware update. If a cartridge isn’t an official HP cartridge, the new update detects this and automatically blocks users from printing anything out. This resulted in a huge backlash against the company. HP describes their decision as “protecting its intellectual property”, “dynamic security” and the decision has been made “to enhance the overall printing experience for customers”. HP’s explanations, however, have not made the public sympathise with them. People feel cheated, angry and milked for their money – forced to adopt more expensive products.

The anger and uproar coming from the people is understandable. Non-Original cartridges are much cheaper than Originals.
