A Short End-of-Year Message – 2023

Featured

As we get nearer to the end of 2023, the staff at InknToner UK agree that the last blog of 2023 should be straight from the heart. We concluded that the following should be a brief recap and look back at this year and its events. However, this blog should be a small glimpse into the future year ahead of us – 2024.

It’s almost unbelievable that the year is over so soon. Just moments ago, we saw the end of 2022, which we remember as the time during which Covid-19 posed a threat to us. 2023 was a fresh, post-pandemic start with a new outlook on life. Throughout this year, we observed important world events take place – from natural disasters, celebrations and festivities to political elections and shifts in views around the world. Whether you look back at this year as good or bad, no one can deny that this year has plenty of examples of positive human traits – solidarity, kindness, love, endurance and heroism. In spite of all the hardship, negativity and problems people around the globe encountered, there were still people capable of good.

This was a big year for all of us. Although it may seem at times that life is moving too slow or too fast and even if it may seem like little progress has been made in life, we move forward and will continue to do so.

InknToner UK would like to thank all of its customers, visitors and audiences throughout the world for being a part of our journey. We wish you happiness and peace for the rest of this year, next year and the many years to come. See you next year!

Time for another Christmas with InknToner UK!

Featured

The origins of Christmas customs unroll like the pages of a history novel, weaving together pagan roots and Christian adoption, as the festive season blankets the world in dazzling lights and joyful tunes. The Christmas tree, one of the season’s most recognisable symbols, has strong pagan roots that date back to ancient cultures.

Christmas Tree

Pagans loved the evergreen tree for its capacity to resist harsh winter circumstances because it represented determination and the promise of life’s continuation. Evergreens were connected with Balder, the god of light, who was thought to be revived after his death in Norse mythology. During the winter solstice, Germanic tribes often decorated their dwellings with evergreen trees.

Enter Christianity, where the Church strove to reinterpret and incorporate existing traditions into the faith’s structure. With its pagan origins, the Christmas tree was transformed into a Christian symbol of eternal life through Christ. Devout Christians in Germany began adorning their homes with ornamented evergreen trees during the Christmas season around the 16th century.

Similarly, gift-giving has its origins in the Roman festival of Saturnalia, a celebration of the deity Saturn that included feasts, celebrations and the exchanging of presents. This ritual was established by early Christians in accordance with the biblical story of the Magi delivering gifts to the newborn Jesus.

The blending of pagan ceremonies and Christian ideas goes down to the day of Christmas. While experts argue the exact date of Jesus’ birth, the choice of December 25th matched with the Roman festival of Sol Invictus, which celebrated the “unconquered sun.” The Church attempted to refocus the festivities on the birth of the Son of God, though the exact date of the Messiah’s birth is unknown and is more likely to be around October or early November time.

Bag Of Presents

The interaction between pagan origins and Christian adaptation has given rise to the complex array of rituals we recognise today in the kaleidoscope of Christmas traditions. Whether it’s decorating a Christmas tree, giving gifts, or celebrating the season, each ritual has a history that spans nations, faiths, and centuries, resulting in a worldwide celebration that transcends time and belief.

Today, Christmas focuses on giving and spending time with family and friends. No one deserves to be sad or alone on Christmas. It’s one of the few times a year that people around the world seem more vibrant and joyful.

A Spooktacular History of Halloween!

Featured

On Tuesday, Halloween, the one day a year where you can wear the scariest or silliest costumes outside and look (fairly) normal was celebrated again. Many people celebrate this tradition, but very few know about the origins of the celebration. Why is Halloween celebrated? How did the traditions we know today evolve over time? And why is it even called Halloween? Keep reading to find out!

What are the origins of Halloween?

Halloween’s origins date back to an ancient festival celebrated by the Celts (the largest single group of these people were from Ireland, Scotland, Wales and Cornwall) over 2,000 years ago called “Samhain”, according the The World Book Encyclopedia. During this celebratory time, the Celts believed the dead would walk among the living and visiting the deceased was possible.

A black silhouette of a cat sitting on a tree branch in the glimmer of an orange moon.

How did costumes, candy and trick-or-treating come about?

Some sources claim that the Celtic people would often wear ghoulish costumes to keep spirits away, making them mistake them for other spirits, while other Celts offered spirits sweets.

During the medieval period, the Catholic Church (despite it conflicting with Bible teachings) adopted these pagan customs and church members went from house to house wearing costumes and asking for small gifts. Creatures like ghosts, vampires, werewolves, witches or zombies are popular costumes to wear, since they’re all connected to evil, the spirit world or the supernatural.

Jack-O'-Lantern glowing in the dark

Halloween Jack-O’-Lanterns originated in medieval Britain, where dressed-up Halloween celebrators would go door-to-door asking for food in return for prayer for the dead and a hollowed out turnip with a candle inside, representing a soul in a purgatory. According to some sources, these lanterns warded off evil spirits. In 1800’s America, more available and easy to carve pumpkins replaced turnips, and that’s how Jack-O’-Lanterns came to be.

Why do we call it ‘Halloween’?

Samhain, the Celtic festival from which Halloween originates from, means “summer’s end”. It marked the start of the dark winter season and was celebrated around 1st November. Around the years 700-800 A.D., the Christian Church established All Saints’ Day, also called All Hallows’ (also meaning “saint” or “one who is holy”). The evening before this event is known as All Hallows’ Eve or, when abbreviated, All Hallow’een, later becoming the celebration we know today as “Halloween”.

The history of this annual tradition is very interesting, especially considering that it is over 2,000 years old! Halloween is an ancient celebration with a seriously spooky origin story.

EU – New October Tax!

Featured

From 1st October 2023, the new EU draft law – the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) – will enter into force with a 3 year transition period following, during which only reporting obligations will apply.

EU Flag

CBAM Effects

The CBAM is one of several tax and carbon price reforms proposed as part of the EU’s Green Deal. CBAM’s goal is to combat climate change by reducing greenhouse gases by minimum 55% by 2030 and protecting jobs. Things like, for example, plastics, hydrogen, organic chemicals, including printing products like ink cartridges, fall into the list of products that CBAM encompasses. Other products also include, fertilisers, aluminium, cement, electricity, iron etc.

Carbon Reliant Industries affected by EU CBAM Tax

What does this mean for carbon-reliant industries? Most notably, effects on environment and “carbon leakage” will decrease significantly and be a step towards achieving EU climate goals. EU citizens will have the opportunity to purchase products from a market that is open to environmentally friendly resources! Businesses that focus and invest more into their environmental impact will surely benefit from CBAM, since importing into EU countries will be easier. CBAM will also encourage producers in non-EU countries to green their production processes.

Ink Cartridges – How are they made?

Featured

InknTonerUK sells many products, many of which are ink cartridges. But what processes do our ink cartridges go through before they get to our clients? Find out in this Blog!

The Manufcaturing Process of Ink Cartridges

Ink cartridges are usually made by injecting ink into a plastic or metal shell that has been molded to fit the specifications of a particular printer model. The process of making an ink cartridge typically involves the following steps:

  1. Design and molding: The first step in making an ink cartridge is to design the cartridge and create a mold that will be used to form the plastic or metal shell. This mold is typically created using computer-aided design (CAD) software and a 3D printer, and it is designed to match the dimensions and shape of the printer for which the cartridge will be used.
  2. Injection molding: Once the mold is created, it’s used to inject molten plastic/metal into the shape of the cartridge shell. This process is typically done using an injection molding machine. It’s a machine that heats the material to high temperatures and injects it into the mold under high pressure.

3. Assembly: After the cartridge shell is molded, it’s typically assembled with other components like a print head, ink reservoirs etc. The print head is responsible for spraying ink onto the page, while reservoirs hold ink used by the print head. Electronic components may also include sensors, microprocessors, and other components that help the printer communicate with the cartridge and control operations.

4. Filling: Once the cartridge has been assembled, it is typically filled with ink. This is done by injecting the ink into the ink reservoirs using a filling machine. The ink is usually supplied to the filling machine in large containers, and it’s typically mixed with other ingredients such as solvents and pigments to achieve desired properties.

5. Testing: After the cartridge has been filled, it’s typically tested to ensure proper functioning and it meets required quality standards. This also may involve testing print quality, checking for leaks or defects, and verifying that it’s compatible with a specific printer.

6. Packaging: Once the cartridge has been tested and approved, it is typically packaged for shipping. This may also involve sealing cartridges and labeling them with product information, like the model number etc.

Epson’s Second Environmental Campaign!

Featured

For the second consecutive year, Epson is focusing on raising awareness about global warming through another, second Environmental Campaign. This year, the environmental campaign also focuses on the work of National Geographic Explorer and ecologist Professor Isla Myers-Smith, who has studied the impact of climate change on the Arctic tundra for almost 20 years.

Epson's Second Environmental Campaign focuses on the Arctic

Observations made by Professor Myers-Smith and her colleagues indicate plants and greenery are more frequent in the Arctic, where permafrost is decreasing. Additionally, the warm temperatures cause Arctic permafrost to disappear. This therefore releases CO2 (a greenhouse gas), which accelerates global warming and speeds up disappearance of permafrost in the Arctic. The growth of taller, denser plants, captures snow and warms the ground causing more release of carbon into the atmosphere!

Scientists predict the world’s permafrost will substantially decrease by 2100. A January 2022 study predicted the amount of carbon released by melting permafrost could be 624,000,000 tons per year!

Prof. Myers-Smith states that we can change statistics by doing things like saving energy, finding alternative ways to travel to work etc.

Arctic Snow Fox - Epson's Environmental Campaign to save the Arctic Tundra

“It is important for all of us to be aware of how our choices impact the environment in our own backyards and around the planet.”

Epson is determined to lowering impact on climate. Moreover, this campaign aims to encourage businesses and consumers to do the same and choose technology that reduces carbon footprint.

Blase Day with InknTonerUK!

Featured

Today, a strange event is taking place. Many people around the world are celebrating Blase Day, an annual event. How?

Blase Day releases negative emotions and opens up a door for people to feel displeasure with things they find unimpressive.

The name of this odd celebration originates from the French word ‘blase’. Someone described as ‘blase’ is difficult to impress and indifferent to things (usually because they have experienced them before. For example, they have already had many interesting and exciting life experiences). So a ‘blase’ person is difficult to impress and harder to please. The French word has been used to name this day because of the ties it has to the French who can be identified as quite ‘blase’ at times, since they have a very rich culture and are no longer often impressed by artwork or other aspects of culture. This makes this day very suitable for people who adopt this distinct mindset.

The Day comes from the French word 'blase'.

Being blase does not mean someone is unenthusiastic or rude, but rather being less expressive with emotions and not as dramatic.

Celebrating Blase Day

Celebrate today by being blase yourself! Today, you don’t need to fake enthusiasm in things you have no interest in. It’s a perfect way to complain about things you find unimpressive.

Remembrance Day in 2022

Featured

104 years ago, World War I ended. The loss of life on both participating sides was greater than in any previous war in history and was not limited to soldiers. Furthermore, new weapons and inventions were used in ways that showed a new, darker side of humanity. Today, we remember and honour the lives people gave for our freedom, peace and stability in Europe through Remembrance Day.

The horrifying images in the Great War prompted nations around the world to create the League of Nations and avoid another devastating war in Europe and around the world. About 20 years later, the world entangled itself in another, more deadly war known as World War II. After discoveries of the inhumanity and mass genocide of different groups in extremist countries committed before, during and even after the war, the League of Nations ceased its operations and the United Nations (UN) began to maintain peace and stability in the world.

Remembrance Day This Year

Today, Europe faces war on its continent again. With the Russian invasion on Ukraine earlier this year, many people demand peace. Remembrance Day, an event to commemorate the people who lost their lives during one of the worst events in history and remind everyone that war must never return to Europe. This year, however, its Remembrance Day takes place while people give their lives in another deadly war.
