Here at InknTonerUK we always strive to keep ink cartridge and toner cartridge prices to bare minimum and improve our overall customer service whenever possible. That is why, we have introduced new website improvements. The new feature gives our customers wider choice when buying toner cartridges. Previously Ink’n’TonerUK website offered 2 choices, Compatible Toner Cartridges and Original Toner Cartridges, but now our customers have to make a choice out of 3 options, as additional option has been added, called Budget Compatible and the “Compatible Cartridge” has been changed to “Premium Compatible”. This feature is more difficult to implement, than you might think and it is not feasible with every website. Fortunately, our website is designed in a way that, makes this change possible. Now InknTonerUK.co.uk is one of very few, if not the only site that offers Budget Compatible, Premium Compatible and Original Cartridge for the same printer.

For example, if you would select HP Laserjet P4515N printer and look for high capacity black HP 64 toner cartridge. This is what you would be presented with.

As you can see, the Budget Cartridge price is much cheaper. It can actually be even up to 4 or 5 times cheaper, than the Original.

The new feature gives you options, but how do you know which one is the right for you? Premium Compatible

Premium compatible option is probably best value for money to choose. It’s cheaper than originals but quality is much better than the budgets. However, it’s still as good as the original.

Original Cartridge

Original cartridge is made by the same company as the printer and guarantees 100% satisfactory results. It is recommended, if you are a bit fussy about print quality and don’t mind spending a little extra.

Epson WorkForce Pro series InkJet printers are better, than most LaserJet printers.

When it comes to choosing a printer, a lot of things has to be considered, especially if you have large workloads. Cost per page (CPP), is by far the most vital statistic to consider when buying any printer, as this will determine the total cost of ownership (TCO). So far, LaserJet printers that use toner cartridges, where the leading printers for medium and large businesses. With toner cartridges being more expensive, than ink cartridges, there was a gap in the industry for someone to develop a printer that would take cheaper ink cartridges but the quality and printing speed would stay the same or even better. Epson decided to take on the challenge and successfully developed Epson WorkForce Pro InkJet printers that print faster, than most of the LaserJet printers, while maintaining the quality that of a LaserJet.

The reason why you can call the Epson printer “laser killer” is because it is!!!

Epson proved that the new printers are faster than LaserJet for half of the cost by running few tests. They compared simplex and duplex for Epson 4535 DWF against Hp colour LaserJet M175A and Brother 9120CN printers respectively. The Epson inkjet printer took only 27 seconds to print 4 pages, Brother 9120CN finished second and printed 4 pages in 44 seconds while Hp colour LaserJet M175A printed its first page after 27 seconds and finished third. After the test it was clear that the competitive LaserJet printers lost to InkJet giving the right to call Epson 4535 DWF – “Laser Killer”. Keep in mind that InkJet will consume 80% energy making it an extremely economical all round printer.

Battle: Original vs Compatible

Matrix of the Problem

Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) such as Canon, HP, Brother and Epson etc – take years to design, develop new technology and manufacture their printers. Apparently, it takes up so much of their resources, that by the time the printers fully develop and are ready for selling to the consumers – the OEM companies are in a loss. The only way for the OEM to get their investment back and make profit, is to sell ink and toner cartridges at higher prices and try to prevent the public from buying the compatible ink and toner cartridges, although the latter is unnecessary. It’s a difficult battle for many companies, big or small. What does the competition look like today, and what tactics are used? Let’s get started and get into the details of every battle constantly fought by huge companies.

Dirty Tactics

One of the latest moves by HP in the battle of original vs compatible ink and toner cartridges, is to install new software drivers on to your computer after you bought HP inkjet printer. Once it is time for you to get your replacement inks, you decide to go for the cheaper compatible HP ink cartridges. Your cartridges arrive swiftly and It is all fine, but after you inserted the compatible ink cartridges into the printer, the software installed by the HP confronts you with the following messages:

“Counterfeit or Used Cartridges Installed”

Warning

Your printer warranty does not cover repairs or service due to use of non-original ink cartridges
Information about ink levels will not be available
This is not a genuine ink cartridge to continue click OK, to cancel the print job click Cancel (no OK button provided)

The false information displayed such as “counterfeit ink cartridge installed” can really put the consumer off and make them feel as if they are doing something wrong. The Remanufacture Industry invested time to develop compatible ink and toner cartridges and OEM such as HP bombard the consumers with unnecessary information, in some cases causing the consumers to send the 100% fine compatible ink cartridge back where they bought it from.

Original or Compatible Ink Cartridge for me?

When I first got into the printing industry, I was not aware of compatible/remanufactured/aftermarket ink and toner cartridges. The consumer awareness is a vital part that determines, what we purchase and who we sponsor. While multi-million companies base their success on profit, sometimes the consumer is lost in the middle of all the “palava” but facts remain facts regardless of the OEM companies trying to tell you otherwise. Advantages of purchasing the compatible ink cartridges instead of originals are huge and undeniable. By purchasing the compatible inks you save bundles of cash on your printing costs, while the effect on printing quality is only slight, you also contribute to a cleaner planet.

How To Store Your Compatible Ink Cartridges

Every so often our customers request information about the shelf life of their cartridges and how to store them correctly. Generally, the fresher the cartridge the better, but they can be kept for a while if stored correctly.

With this is mind, how long can an inkjet cartridge last for if stored correctly?

There are two types of compatible cartridges; they are called compatible and remanufactured. Generally these two types fall under the same heading on our website (compatible). For the purpose of this article, we must distinguish the two different types as different rules apply to these cartridges.

First lets start with compatible inkjet cartridges

Compatible cartridges are brand new copies of original cartridges. They were made by a different company other than the original manufacturer. These cartridges, often referred to as ink tanks, feature a simple design which consists of an ink reservoir, computer chip and ink exit hole. Because these cartridges have no print head they can last for at least a year. Some compatible cartridges come with an expiry date of two years. These cartridges last longer than remanufactured cartridges because they do not have a print head which can become blocked over time. The ink stays completely in the reservoir chamber of the cartridge which removes common problems which can be found with remanufactured cartridges.

Normally, compatible cartridges come with a vacuum sealed ink valve at the bottom of the cartridge and sealed vent on the top which you take off when unpacking the cartridge. The cartridge itself is either sealed in a plastic or vacuum polyethylene or anti-static plastic bag for extra longevity.

Remanufactured cartridges

Now lets take a look at remanufactured cartridges which have a shelf life of about three to four months if you’re looking to get good quality prints. Remanufactured cartridges can last longer in storage but it depends on the quality of the cartridge as there are many grades of remanufactured cartridges. Remanufactured cartridges have a more complicated design than compatibles as they have a printhead integrated into the body, sponge and electrical strip. The printhead is normally sealed over with tape and comes with a protective clip for storage and shipping. These cartridges have small vent holes at the top of the cartridge are necessary to allow ink flow. Remanufactured ink cartridges come in a sealed plastic bag to prevent accidental ink contamination during shipping.

Because of the addition of a printhead in remanufactured cartridges, ink which sits near or in the printhead can block the printhead nozzles as it becomes thicker due to water evaporation from the ink. This results in poor print quality and will eventually prevent the cartridge from printing at all.

How to store your compatible and remanufactured cartridges.

Keep them out of direct sunlight and away from heat. A desk drawer could be ideal depending on temperature.
Be sure to store your cartridges in the upright position. This keeps remanufactured cartridges in ideal condition.
Keep them in their original packaging until you need them.
When possible, avoid storing your cartridges for extended periods of time to get the best results from them.

Lexmark Oppose Cartridge Remanufacturing

Lexmark are seen by the cartridge re-manufacturing to be against the reuse of their cartridges. They have taken steps to prevent and oppose their cartridges from being recycled. How do Lexmark oppose remanufacturing? Here’s how..

Anti recycling Patent

Lexmark’s US patent # 6099101 which they use on their cartridges describes how the cartridge will ‘fry’ the printhead rendering it useless when it senses ink has dried up. This makes their cartridges impossible to remanufacture and they can only be sent to landfill; an incredibly wasteful use of resources. On top of this Lexmark put very little ink in these cartridges making them not an environmentally friendly choice of cartridge.

Wasteful

The Lexmark cartridges which come with new printers contain very little ink and will produce a few pages of A4 printing before they run out.

The cost of replacing Lexmark ink cartridges will come as a shock to many users as they usually cost more than the printer, sometimes even two times as much!

Lexmark’s No:1 cartridge contains cyan, magenta and yellow ink. It mixes them all together to give you black. It’s an incredibly expensive and wasteful way of printing with black. The cartridge is also expensive and contains little ink.

Lexmark attempt to stamp out remanufacturing and further oppose it

Lexmark’s prebate or return program scheme actively discourages recycling. How? By making you promise to return the cartridge back to Lexmark or to throw it away after use. Lexmark give you a cash incentive on the cost of their cartridges to do so. This takes the remanufacturing industry completely out of the window. Seals across their cartridge packing say that by opening it, you agree to their terms and will abide their scheme. This is another way Lexmark have devised to take out the cartridge remanufacturing industry. In the past Lexmark have threatened and taken small companies to court. Clearly they oppose people recycling their cartridges.

In some of their black cartridges, Lexmark use a chemical mixed with their ink which blocks the cartridge printhead near the end of its life making it very difficult to reuse. This is another way in which Lexmark have tried to stamp out cartridge re-manufacturing. The blocking can additionally be seen as it creates a gunge over time as it gets exposed to air.

Price Fixing

Lexmark’s No: 2, 3, 4, 5 and 108XL original cartridges are exclusively supplied to the Dixons group of companies; price fixing by controlling who can sell these cartridges. These cartridges are also sold at a premium, contain very little ink and represent poor value for money.

Some OEM (original) cartridge manufactures don’t like the remanufacturing industry recycling their cartridges and reselling them to customers at a lower rate. The most obvious example would be Lexmark who make their cartridges very difficult to remanufacture. Lexmark don’t won’t the cartridge remanufacturing industry refurbishing their cartridges or you buying a compatible Lexmark cartridge whether it be an ink cartridge or toner cartridge. They have introduced their return program scheme to further eliminate their cartridges being recycled and put it under the guise of recycling. Lexmark return and non return program cartridges are exactly the same except the non-return program cartridge is significantly more expensive. Some retailers have stopped selling the non-return program Lexmark cartridges as there’s no point. It only serves to confuse and baffle the customer.

Lexmark also continue their onslaught by including many different page yields for some of their printer consumable ranges. With up to four different page yield cartridges – standard – high – extra high and extra extra high – combined with the option of having each cartridge as a return or non-return program cartridge the choice can be overwhelming and completely unnecessary. These Lexmark cartridges can all hold the same yield but are filled to different levels and sold at a premium. This is an incredible waste of materials and actually promotes plastics being sent to landfill which take hundreds of years to decompose. The actual cost of toner is minuscule yet Lexmark overcharge massively for something which costs them pennies to do.

HP

HP recognise the remanufacturing industry and take a much more pro-active approach to their cartridges being remanufactured. Their cartridges also offer more value to the customer while promoting the use of recycled materials and products at the same time. To put it in a nutshell HP additionally beat Lexmark every time in terms of quality, cost and remanufacturing. Even HP’s packaging is more environmentally conscious with the use of cardboard much more prevalent than Lexmark’s. The author understands that this is a biased view point but has based this decision on the experience gained working within the printing consumables industry for four years.

Recycling Ink – from time to time we get asked about this and thought we’d shed some light on this for all our dedicated and environmentally friendly customers.

Reasons Why?

Environment

The main reason is that recycling your empty ink cartridge is the environmentally friendly thing to do. Leaving your ink cartridge to rot in land fill will take up to 800 years to bio degrade, even then the chemicals from the cartridge go into the earth which can pollute ground water. To put that into perspective, that means if Christopher Columbus left his HP 21 ink cartridge lying around it would still be here today for all to see.

Recycling Ink Helps Charity!

With each ink cartridge that is returned to us we give money to charity through our Caring For Kids scheme. Our most recent donation was five hundred and sixty pounds which we sent to great ormond street children’s hospital.

Saving Money by Recycling Ink

Help recycling through buying recycled products. Most of the time you’ll find more ink or toner in compatible cartridges than the originals and it will cost you less. All our compatible ink cartridges come fully guaranteed against faulty printing performance but if for whatever reason you are not happy then you can exchange or refund your order as you require.

With all ink cartridges which have value and we would like to have back we send a freepost recycling bag out with your order. All you have to do is place your empty ink cartridges into this bag and pop it in the post, then leave the rest up to us! Sending ink cartridges which we do not want back will cost the charity money so please do not send us back your unwanted ink cartridges unless your order came with a freepost recycling bag.
