Consumers Free Choice

It is obvious and everyone knows that, the consumers have the freedom to buy whatever they desire. They can buy compatibles like ink cartridges, toner cartridges, fuser units and drum units or the originals. However, the customers have to be aware, that the Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) DO NOT want consumers to be purchasing cheaper ink cartridges for the printer that they have spent thousands to develop. Although, this was not the case at least momentarily with Dell.  According to Choice Stationery Supplies, the computer technology giant had a PDF on their web titled “Dell Printer and Printer Supplies Environmental Policy” which included the following

“Dell printers do not prevent the use of non manufacture printer supplies ink, toner, drums, rollers, fusers etc. The use of non-Dell printer supplies ink, toner, drums, rollers, fusers, including refill and re-manufactured supplies is a customer’s choice.”

However, the PDF on the Dell’s website was short lived and seems to be removed.

OEMs against Compatibles

The statement from Dell flies in the face of all Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) who are strongly determined to prevent any use of compatible ink or toner cartridges, hence the probable reason why it was taken off.

To an extent, there is threat that compatible products pose to the profits of the OEMs. The quality of compatible cartridges has increased, while the cost price remains much lower, than the original cartridges, making the consumers wonder why should they pay more for similar results.

Recently, OEMs such as Canon, Lexmark, Brother have taken steps to prevent consumers from using compatible cartridges. Canon have patented re manufacturing method, while several OEMs released statements advising the customers against the compatibles. Additionally, most of the OEMs have introduced POP-UPS to hassle consumers if they insert compatible cartridges in their printer. Sometimes, even lying that there is no ink left when the brand new re manufactured cartridge has just been inserted.

Compatibles are good for Environment and Your Wallet

In order to keep the balance on the planet between saving resources and producing new products, it is extremely important that we continue to use compatible ink cartridges and compatible toner cartridges, as well as other compatible consumables. The amount of waste keeps increasing, while resources are limited too. So the next time you have to make a decision between the compatible or original consumables and you decide to go for the re-manufactured one – just know that, not only you are saving enormously on the price but you are also doing the right thing by helping to keep the environment clean while at the same time saving the planets resources. This might not seem like much but when you have 7 billion people on the planet – it all adds up.

Where can I buy high quality Compatible Cartridges?

Epson

Just take a minute and have a quick look at the prices above. The original Black Epson T0711 costs £9.98, which is decent but, if you look just a bit to the left, you will the the Premium Compatible price and it is only £2.29!!!! That is staggeringly low.

Unseen savings like these are unseen to a regular consumer because, they ether heard rumours that compatibles are bad or had 1 or 2 bad experiences with them and never looked back again. Now, don’t get me wrong, of course the compatible ink cartridge prints are slightly less sharp and you might get an odd faulty cartridge, but most of the time they are perfectly fine and to be honest, there are not much of a difference between the two. In this case, the fact is that the compatibles ink cartridges are four times cheaper and that’s why the Epson T0711 holds the title of the cheapest ink cartridges.

At the end of the day, it is a choice you have to make whether you want to save lots of money and buy the compatibles but get an odd problem here or there or you can buy the pricier originals and not worry about anything going wrong. The decision is yours.

HP

Last but not least on our list are the HP cheapest ink cartridges. As you can see for these cartridges you even have 3 choices. You can go for the Budget, Premium or the Original ones. Budget cartridges are refilled and we can also refill them for you, if you send in your used ink cartridges to us with our free post (Read more). However the best choice is definitely the premium compatibles as they guarantee the best value for money.

The original HP 300 ink cartridge cost is fair £11.85 but the if you look again to the options available to you more to the left, you’ll discover cheapest ink cartridges at the price of 6.99 for refill and premium. Keep in mind that you also get high capacity ink cartridges because they have maximum ink in them, so not only you paying twice less but you are also receiving twice as much ink in return!!!

Conclusion

Firstly, I will be the first one to say this “the compatibles are not for everyone”. If you have your big business which depends on highest quality prints and you simply cannot afford an odd faulty ink cartridge, or, furthermore, maybe you just simply can’t stand the idea of any problem that would cause the cartridge to be replaced. Then, obviously the compatibles are not for you, but if you are a SOHO user or just print occasionally and you are prepared to be a bit more patient if necessary, then you will be able to take advantage of the cheapest ink cartridges and save huge amounts of money in the long run.

Need Printer Ink – Think InknToneruk

written by Donatas Ivaskevicius

InknTonerUK Website Improvements

Here at InknTonerUK we always strive to keep ink cartridge and toner cartridge prices to bare minimum and improve our overall customer service whenever possible. That is why, we have introduced new website improvements. The new feature gives our customers wider choice when buying toner cartridges. Previously Ink’n’TonerUK website offered 2 choices, Compatible Toner Cartridges and Original Toner Cartridges, but now our customers have to make a choice out of 3 options, as additional option has been added, called Budget Compatible and the “Compatible Cartridge” has been changed to “Premium Compatible”. This feature is more difficult to implement, than you might think and it is not feasible with every website. Fortunately, our website is designed in a way that, makes this change possible. Now InknTonerUK.co.uk is one of very few, if not the only site that offers Budget Compatible, Premium Compatible and Original Cartridge for the same printer.

For example, if you would select HP Laserjet P4515N printer and look for high capacity black HP 64 toner cartridge. This is what you would be presented with.

As you can see, the Budget Cartridge price is much cheaper. It can actually be even up to 4 or 5 times cheaper, than the Original.

The new feature gives you options, but how do you know which one is the right for you? Well, if you buy toner cartridges from us often, then you might already have noticed the following buttons on the website which explain Budget Refill Cartridge, Premium Compatible Cartridge and Original Compatible Cartridge.

However, to make sure every customer knows what’s best for them, they need to know as much information as possible about the budget, premium and original cartridges. Below, Budget Cartridges, Premium Cartridges and Original Cartridges are explained in more detail.

Budget Compatible

Choosing Budget compatible cartridges, means you will pay rock bottom price for the cartridges. It is advised to purchase budget compatible, when you print a tremendous amount of prints daily and the printing quality is not a priority. Disadvantage of budget compatibles is that it’s non-recyclable and uses cheaper ink, however print quality is still relatively high.

Premium Compatible

Premium compatible option is probably best value for money to choose. It’s cheaper than originals but quality is much better than the budgets. However, it’s still as good as the original.

Original Cartridge

Original cartridge is made by the same company as the printer and guarantees 100% satisfactory results. It is recommended, if you are a bit fussy about print quality and don’t mind spending a little extra.

Refill Ink Cartridges Yourself?

While self refilling your ink cartridges may be an attractively cost-effective way of taking care of your printing needs, there are many pitfalls and circumstances which depend on its success. Inktank cartridges are not included here.

Inkjet Cartridges – Refilling

1) Vacuum Conditions

You have to fill ink cartridges under vacuum conditions, if you don’t it creates air bubbles inside the cartridge. When this happens the ink gets blocked and the ink cartridge will not work.

2) Quality of the ink.

If you refill a inkjet cartridge yourself you’ll probably be buying poor quality ink which won’t give good printing results. We use high quality German ink manufactured by a company called OCP. The ink we use has a very similar test result to original ink cartridges.

3) Getting the ink cartridges to work.

Once an ink cartridge has been filled you need to feed ink into its printhead ready for printing. This is done by a special machine which uses suction to draw ink directly to the inkjet cartridge printhead.

4) Specialist Equipment

While you don’t need specialist remanufacturing equipment to fill an ink cartridge it certainly helps. At ink’n’toner’uk we use state-of-the-art remanufacturing equipment to fill all our compatible ink cartridges. We go quite a long way to ensure you get the very best compatible ink cartridges from us and implement lengthy and time consuming techniques and procedures to ensure that our cartridges will not only you the best printing results but they will continue to give you fantastic looking printing for the duration of the ink cartridges life.

5) Age of the cartridges you are filling

You should be refilling an ink cartridge as soon as it has been used up to prevent the sponge from drying up and the printhead becoming blocked. The longer you leave an ink cartridge the less likely it is to work. If you do want to buy refilling kits however here are ours.

6) Testing for quality

We would like to point out that all our compatible inkjet cartridges which we sell have all been tested for print quality and electrical failure. People who refill their ink cartridge themselves may not be able to identify if the reason their ink cartridge is not working is because the electrical strip on the ink cartridge is broken.

FAQ

What is an ink cartridge printhead?

The printhead is where the ink comes out of the ink cartridge. It is located on the bottom of the inkjet cartridge and also prints out the image of your page.

What is a sponge in ink cartridges?

The sponge is where all the ink in an ink cartridge is stored. Sponges sit inside the inkjet cartridge and cannot be seen. The sponge, however, will become heavy when it is full of ink and will become lighter as the ink is used up.

What is the electrical strip on the outside of the ink cartridge for?

The electrical strip is the brain of the ink cartridge. Its job is to tell the ink cartridge what to print. It can be seen on the outside of the ink cartridge and, additionally, has contact points which connect with your printers electrics.

How to Save Money On Your Printing Costs

From time to time we get asked this very common question and thought we’d like to shed some light on one of the most notable and worthwhile issues pertaining to the world of printing, – how to save money on your printing. The fact is there are many ways in which you can save with only a few requiring additional expenditure with the promise of eventual overall lower printing costs obtained.

So, being the caring people we are whose prime goal is to make our customers happy, we thought we’d compile a list of ten ways in which you can save money with your printing expenditure. The order of our list has no relevance in the order of importance, just the way which we came up with these money saving solutions.

1. Do Less Printing

It may sound obvious but none the less worth pointing out as it’s the easiest way to save on your printing expenditure. The next time you go to hit the print button firstly assess whether you really need that email or webpage printed or can you get the information you require by reading it from the computer screen.

2. Use Compatible Ink Cartridge or Compatible Toner Cartridges

This too may again sound obvious but there are significant cost savings to be made, with hundreds of potential English pounds to be saved over the course of a year. Take the HP Laserjet 4050 for example, a very popular mono laserjet printer where the cost of the compatible toner cartridges is well under half the price of originals.

Original manufactures use scare tactics with warranty implications etc to try and put you off using compatible toner cartridges with your printer. This is because these manufactures want you to buy their toner cartridges so they can make more money which isn’t beneficial for you as you will have to pay more for your printing.

As you might have guessed the image quality from compatible toner and ink cartridges will not be on par with originals but their print quality is only an issue if your work is being seen by clientele. Otherwise compatible toner cartridges and compatible ink cartridges are a great way to save money with your printing.

Compatible ink and toner cartridges are also kinder to the environment as they promote the use of recycling.

3. Utilise Both Sides Of Your Printing Paper

While a sheet of paper may not cost much, you will be surprised by how much you can save by literally cutting your paper consumption in half. It is also less wasteful of your resources. We know that not everyone has a duplexer unit fitted in their printer (double sided printing equipment) but most allow you to manually print on both sides in print preferences. (See Tips on saving money with your printer cartridges).

4. Change Your Font

What I hear you say? But did you know that research performed by a Dutch printing company concluded that Century Gothic and Times New Roman fonts use around 30% less ink or toner than Arial and Sans Serif. The company performed a case study at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay who annually spent around $100,000 in printing consumables. It was found that after the University switched to Century Gothic printing font that a saving of $10,000 was achieved.

Another great way of saving on your printing costs is by reducing your font size; if you normally print in size 12 reduce it to size 11 or 10 and reduce the amount of ink or toner you use in your printing. Also avoid using the “bold” if you want to save on your printing costs as the simple truth of the matter is that it uses more ink or toner from your cartridges.

5. Print in Draft Mode

Selecting draft or rough print setting in print preferences will help you save on your printing costs. You can also lower the dpi (dots per inch) setting in your print preferences which will help save on ink or toner. You can always reselect the best settings for when you need to but it means you won’t always be printing your best quality for things you don’t need it for, like notes, prices, webpage’s etc.
6. Utilise Print Preview

Using this feature prevents printing waste pages like the URL, time and date which frequently is on an extra page if your printing a web page. It’s an ineffective and wasteful way of managing your resources. Using print preview allows you to select the pages you want printed and not the others; this helps you save money on your paper and ink or toner cartridges in the long run.
7. Select Black and White If You Own A Colour Printer

As you might of guessed printing in colour is more expensive than Black regardless of if you’re using ink or toner cartridges to print with. To help save money set your printing defaults to monochrome (black and white) and you will definitely save money with your ink or toner cartridges.

8. Purchase A New Printer

An extreme but most notable and worthwhile consideration if you are serious about saving money on your ink or toner cartridges. This consderation should be weighed up by all users not just businesses, with technology always improving there are signifiacnt gains to be made in the world of printers and printing costs.

With old printers, which a lot of users have, your probably using way more ink or toner than you need to be. With these printers the inks dry out if you don’t use them and the’re more exspensive as the demand for them falls so will your pricing options; essentailly making these ink or toner cartridges more expensive to buy and print with.

Over the years your printing requirements may have changed to. Compare the amount you used to print when you purchased your printer to the amount you do now and whether you could benefit from additional features and functions now available with modern printers. Does your printer have a duplex unit? Consider how many multi-page documents and how much money you could save from halfing your paper usuage.

Calculating costs and saving money

Calculate your cost-per-print with your current printer by dividing your ink or toner cartridges page yield by its cost to determine whether your getting value for money from your printing. Depending on what printer you have, your findings may surprise you.

Don’t confuse yourself by initial costly purchases if you are serious about saving money on your ink or toner cartridges. The fact of the matter is the less you pay for your printer the more you pay for your ink or toner cartridges, usually with entry level printers have triple or quadritple the cost-per-page than expensive printers do. If you look at how much you print, an average usuage of 1,200 pages pages per month within the first year will usually ensure you break even with then signifiant cost savings to be made on future purchases.

9. Consider a Managed-Print Scheme

Managed printing isn’t something to be overly cautious of and can genuinely save you a considerable amount of money. One of the main things about a managed print scheme is that all costs become transparent. There are many other great things about these schemes which help improve efficiency and time spent managing your printing supplies. For example if your printer stops working for whatever reason, an engineer will come out and fix it for you with all the parts and labour included. Also you don’t purchase your toners, instead you call a number with your PIN and the next day your toners come to you, simple! A lot of managed print contracts come with hardware included so there is nothing to pay for at the start of the contract; helping to cut costs even further with your ink and toner cartridges.

10. Purchase your Ink and Toner Cartridges In Multi-Packs

But it costs more money I hear you cry! But wait, a little analysis will reveal a lower cost-per-page is almost certainly achievable by doing so which is a great way to save on your ink and toner cartridges. Also by purchasing in bulk you help reduce time spent ordering, always have a spare handy and help cut down the environmental impact of all those lorries delivering your ink and toner cartridges. Overall it increases efficiency, productivity while reducing your overall printing costs.

You could also recycle your cartridges at local recycling facilities.

Money Saving Tips with Cartridges

Proof read before you print

To prevent wasted pages which you don’t/can’t use, perform spelling and grammar checks before printing off anything. This way you won’t waste your resources, time or money going back to correct mistakes which could’ve been rectified in the first instance. You would be surprised with the amount of cumulative printing waste which results from not initially checking your work.

Preview your work before it is printed by using print preview

Print preview allows you to preview and make amendments to your work before it is printed. You can also change the layout of your work from portrait to landscape or vice versa. These are all handy tools which prevent you using unnecessary ink or toner from your cartridge.

To access this function scroll down in the file menu to select print preview. You can hit Esc to return to your normal view.

Only select the pages which you wish to print – money saved on paper

Avoid wasting paper/ink by not printing pages you don’t need. Select page numbers you wish to print in the print dialogue box.

Learn to use the print properties box

Using the print properties box can help save you lots of money with your ink or toner cartridges. Print properties can do many things but the there are two main options you should learn to use, these are,

  • Select your print quality mode, – draft, normal or best
  • Select either Black or Colour printing

More ink is used in higher print settings and colour ink is generally more expensive than Black so bear this in mind when your printing out things like recipes, driving directions and other general printing. Draft mode is also quicker to print with.

To select your print quality and help save money using your printer cartridges go to Print>Properties>Print Quality.

When you do need colour printing but not best quality colour you should switch to greyscale mode which can be found in the colour tab in print properties.

Print heads in ink cartridges save you money

If you barely use your printer you might notice that the ink level seems to go down. This is because your printer will run an automatic head clean on your ink cartridges to keep them working correctly. To avoid this switch your machine off at the on /off button – not the wall socket to ensure your printer is reset before powering down. It is also a good idea to print at least one colour page per week if possible to keep your ink cartridge heads clear and avoid running costly cleaning cycles.

Print off your copies efficiently from the web

In your browser you can select to only print text off without images. It uses up less ink from your ink cartridges. To do this, uncheck the > Print Background Colour and Images box which is located in under file > page setup if you use Firefox or internet options > advanced if you use Internet Explorer.

Look for printable version links on your email, attachments and web pages to avoid printing out unwanted advertisements, images and pages. This way you won’t waste any ink from your ink cartridges and help save money.

Look for PDF options for documents you wish to print. You can save and print these later like any standard document you wish to print or avoid using your ink or toner cartridges alltogther.

Consider compatible Ink Cartridges – Save more money on Cartridges!

You can save a significant amount of money with your printing when you switch to high quality compatible cartridges.
